With a TikTok ban set to come into effect in the US on Sunday, the app faces an uncertain future stateside. According to Sky News, it was ruled by the US Supreme Court that from Sunday (19 January), TikTok will be removed from Google and Android stores if it is not sold by it's parent company - leaving many Americans without access to the app.

The UK has already implemented a partial TikTok ban – since 2023 the app has been banned on official devices used by ministers and civil servants. However, this does not extend to personal devices and exemptions are made for government mobile phones where the app is needed for "work purposes".

Analysts have suggested it is "just matter of time" until the US ban on TikTok spreads to allied countries and beyond - as long as the Trump administration presses ahead with it. The app will be banned in America from Sunday after US lawmakers ruled it was a national security risk because of owner ByteDance's ties to the Chinese government - ties it denies.
