IOWA, USA — Central Iowa picked up a healthy round of rain overnight, the kind that quietly taps the windows, rolls across the rooftops and leaves the morning smelling just a little fresher. A broad shield of showers moved in late Monday evening, and by the early morning hours, much of the region had seen a steady soaking.
Saturday and Sunday will be mostly sunny, allowing us to dry out. Temperatures will be above average for this weekend with a chance to hit 60 degrees. Rain chances will return Monday and Tuesday next week ahead of a cold front. Thanksgiving will be much colder with temperatures in the 20s and 30s with wind chills possibly dipping into the teens.
Due to last week's winter storm that dumped nearly 15 inches of snow on the Cedar Falls-Waterloo area and a foot in many other communities, the University of Northern Iowa and Iowa State University are canceling classes Monday "to provide students more time to return to campus from Thanksgiving break.
