ESA’s ExoMars captures massive dust avalanches on Mars triggered by a meteoroid impact
New analysis of imagery from the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO) confirms that a meteoroid triggered the formation of a series of dark streaks on the slopes of Mars' Apollinaris Mons. The European Space Agency (ESA) orbiter captured the resulting dust avalanches shortly before Christmas 2023.
We've known about wind on Mars for decades, but thanks to new research from a Swiss team, we now know those winds can reach speeds up to 100 mph.
“Dust, wind and sand dynamics appear to be the main seasonal drivers of slope streak formation,” Bickel said in a statement. “Meteoroid impacts and quakes seem to be locally distinct, yet globally relatively insignificant drivers.”
“It’s a huge privilege to be leading a mission to Mars,” said Robert Lillis, the UC Berkeley planetary scientist leading the international team of researchers, over email. “ (ESCAPADE) will give us a whole new set of ‘eyes’ in understanding how space weather buffets Mars’ atmosphere … It’s hugely significant.”
Blue Origin is preparing a second launch of its New Glenn rocket, this time with twin Mars orbiters on board. The company will attempt to recover the rocket’s first stage.
One of the best parts about sending rovers like Perseverance to other planets, is sometimes they send back some absolutely stunning photographs.

A massive replica of Mars is landing at the Domain in Austin — and you can see it up close for free
“It’s a chance for families, students and anyone curious about the cosmos to get an up-close experience of Mars that is both visually stunning and intellectually enriching,” she said. “My Mars” is free to view and open to the public throughout its five-day run.
NASA's Perseverance rover has added to its trove of curious finds, as the space agency published a photo of a rock on the surface of Mars that looks like a centuries-old helmet. The rock has a pointed peak, a flared "brim," and textures that could lead ...
