Democratic Rep. Mikie Sherrill won the race for governor in New Jersey, maintaining Democratic control of the seat one year after the state showed signs of shifting toward President Donald Trump.

Ms. Sherrill, a Democrat, will be the second woman to serve as governor of New Jersey. The first, Christine Todd Whitman, a onetime Republican, endorsed Ms. Sherrill.

Democrat Mikie Sherrill, a member of the U.S. House of Representatives and a former Naval helicopter pilot, is set to be the next governor of New Jersey, CBS News projects, after she defeated Republican Jack Ciattarelli in a close race that turned ugly at times.
