Hedgehogs are typically small animals, growing to just 5-12 inches long. Astonishingly, however, one specimen found in Lanarkshire, Scotland last weekend could be compared to the size of a beach ball.
Scottish SPCA's SIU Inspector said that the extent of the birds' suffering brought their most experienced vets to tears.
The Scottish SPCA rescued almost 40,000 animals last year. The animal welfare charity took in 37,214 animals – an average of over 100 per day – in 2024, many of them suffering from abuse and neglect.
