(CBS DETROIT) - The Detroit Lions have hired Denver Broncos passing game assistant John Morton as their new offensive coordinator. The Michigan native, who previously worked with the Lions and head coach Dan Campbell in 2022, will replace Ben Johnson, who was tapped for the head coaching position in Chicago .

The 55-year-old Morton replaces Ben Johnson, who departed the club to take the head coaching post with the Chicago Bears. Morton was a senior offensive assistant with the Lions in 2022 before moving on to the Denver Broncos to serve as the team’s passing game co-ordinator.

Coach Dan Campbell has been looking to fill both of his coordinator openings following the departures of Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn to the Chicago Bears and New York Jets, respectively, as their new head coaches. Detroit is set to promote linebackers coach Kelvin Sheppard to defensive coordinator, a team source told The Athletic last week.

Changes are underway for NFL teams ahead of Super Bowl LIX. The Detroit Lions promoted Kelvin Sheppard to defensive coordinator and John Morton to offensive coordinator. The Jacksonville Jaguars hired Liam Coen as head coach and Anthony Campanile as defensive coordinator.

Campbell hired Morton as a senior offensive assistant that season. It just so happened to be Johnson’s first year as an offensive coordinator and play caller. He was only 35 at the time. Considering Campbell had fired Anthony Lynn just one year into his Detroit tenure, it was crucial for him to get the next hire right.

The NFL is set to conduct its annual Pro Bowl Games Thursday and Sunday, and six Detroit Lions will officially be participating. Detroit has had multiple players selected that have been replaced, including offensive tackle Penei Sewell and wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown. However, they will still be well-represented.
