The San Francisco 49ers expect to release former Pittsburgh Steelers defensive tackle Javon Hagrave this offseason, general manager John Lynch announced on Wednesday.
In early December, the 49ers restructured Hargrave’s contract for the 2025 and ’26 seasons in order to allow for a post-June 1 release. Hargrave is expected to be free to negotiate with other teams by the opening of the new league year in mid-March.
Dallas Cowboys DT Osa Odighizuwa built on a strong 2023 campaign with an equally impressive 2024 season. Odighizuwa would instantly bolster the Steelers' pass rush from the interior defensive line and could improve even further under the mentorship of Steelers DT Cameron Heyward.
Hargrave, who signed a four-year, $84 million deal with the 49ers just two offseasons ago, will now head back to free agency in a cost-cutting move for San Francisco. "It gives him an opportunity to go see what his market is," Lynch said of the move. "And it may include us."
Lynch said Wednesday that the 49ers have no such plans to release wide receiver Deebo Samuel, whose 806 yards from scrimmage in 2024 were his fewest since the 2020 campaign. Samuel, 28, restructured his deal in September. Releasing him with a post-June 1 designation would cost the 49ers about $10.8 million over the next two years, per ESPN.
