RICHMOND, Va. ( WWBT /Gray News) - A retired pilot gave a first-hand view of what it’s like to land at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. Chuck Smith says he has made that approach and landing hundreds of times in his career. He shared a video showing what it looks like to fly near Washington, D.C., and over the Potomac River.

North Carolina Governor Josh Stein confirmed via social media that multiple Charlotte-based crew members were aboard the American Airlines passenger jet.

The helicopter was part of the 12th Aviation Battalion which is on an operational pause following the collision. It will remain so until a review is completed. Officials will look to see if the Black Hawk was in the correct corridor and altitude when it hit the plane, CNN reported.

CBS reported that the crew of the commercial American Eagle jet was Charlotte-based. Debi Epstein, the former wife of flight attendant Ian Epstein, confirmed that he was killed in the air collision between the jet and a military helicopter.

Officials said all 60 passengers aboard the plane, the four flight crew members and three soldiers in the helicopter are dead.

Multiple flights to and from Washington, D.C. were canceled at Dayton International Airport Thursday following a fatal crash involving a commercial jet and military helicopter.

“A PSA Airlines Bombardier CRJ700 regional jet collided in midair with a Sikorsky H-60 helicopter while on approach to Runway 33 at Reagan Washington National Airport around 9 p.m. local time,” the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said in a statement.
