Most of the elections come after a federal court ordered more Black-majority districts in the Mississippi Senate. Lawmakers had to create new boundaries for many districts to comply with the law.
MISSISSIPPI (WCBI) – Special election races are underway in parts of our viewing area. Polls opened this morning at 7 am. In Noxubee County, voters will be determining the outcome for three different races. Those include the Sheriff’s seat, the Coroner’s position, and the race for District 5 Election Commissioner.
DeSoto County residents will return to the polls Nov. 4 to cast their ballots in the Mississippi Senate special elections.
POLLING LOCATION: To find your local polling place, use the Polling Place Locator. POLLING HOURS: Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 4. Anyone still in line at 7 p.m. is entitled to cast a ballot.
These races coincide with the Mississippi House 22 election in Monroe, Clay and Chickasaw counties. That race pits Republican incumbent Jon Lancaster against Democrat Justin Crosby.
Douglas Triplett - (total vote count) or (percentage) The winner replaces former sheriff Tommy Roby, who retired. Noxubee County voters also elected a new coroner, too. The winner replaces former coroner R.L. Calhoun, who retired.
Polling places will be open on Tuesday, Nov. 4, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. across the impacted districts. The special Senate election is the result of a federal court ruling that found Mississippi’s previous Senate map diluted Black voting strength.
