Germany's Christian Democratic Union (CDU) leader Friedrich Merz on Thursday made concessions to the Green Party in the hopes it would lend critically important votes to his multi-billion-euro spending spree.

Even though negotiations to form a coalition have not yet begun, the head of the Christian Democratic Union party, which came out on top in Germany's February 23 elections, has already embarked on major projects in his country and abroad.

The party said they would not support the conservative chancellor-in-waiting’s paradigm-changing plan to invest massively in defense and infrastructure.
