Bangladesh’s new government is struggling to deal with a host of issues, including a stumbling economy and human rights violations, left behind by the ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina six months ago.

Sheikh Hasina was ousted from power in August 2024. Before the toppling of the government, the Awami League-led government oversaw a systematic crackdown on protestors and students

A leading rights organisation reported 12 deaths of people in detention since last year’s student-led protests, alleging torture and extrajudicial killings by security forces.

The extradition of Bangladesh’s former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is a bilateral issue, a senior UN official said on Wednesday. The United Nations Human Rights Office in Geneva today launched the “OHCHR Fact-Finding Report: Human Rights Violations and Abuses related to the Protests of July and August 2024 in Bangladesh”.

The security forces in Bangladesh have arrested as many as 1,308 individuals from across the country as part of the ongoing "Operation Devil Hunt" launched to curb nationwide incidents of mob attacks and vandalism.

Before Sheikh Hasina was ousted in a student-led revolution last August, her govt oversaw a crackdown with "hundreds of extrajudicial killings," the UN said.

There are grounds to believe extrajudicial killings took place with the ‘knowledge and direction’ of the leadership, said the United Nations human rights body.
