CHP in the East Bay temporarily shut down westbound lanes of Highway 24 east of the Caldecott Tunnel in Orinda late Wednesday morning after a possible freeway shooting, authorities said.

ORINDA — A driver escaped injury Wednesday after gunfire exploded on a highway near the Caldecott Tunnel, the California Highway Patrol said. The shooting damaged the driver’s car, according to a statement from the agency. The CHP added that the motorist appears not to have been the target of the bullets.
