An “administrative error” that led to a Maryland man being deported to a brutal prison in El Salvador as part of Donald Trump’s immigration policy has thrust Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia into the national spotlight.
The White House on Tuesday said the Maryland father deported to El Salvador’s mega-prison was an MS-13 leader who will not be returning to the U.S., despite the Trump administration conceding in a prior court filing that he was mistakenly flown to the facility housing some of Latin America’s most notorious gang members.
Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia, who was in the U.S. legally, is now in prison in El Salvador, and federal courts have no jurisdiction to order his release, the Trump administration said in a court filing.
The White House acknowledged Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia was deported in error, but the government is reluctant to try to get him back.
