Yankees’ facial hair policy is not the only tradition changing in 2025
The “New York, New York” tradition began in 1980, when former owner George Steinbrenner wrote Sinatra a letter to ask permission to play the tune as fans exited the stadium. A different rotation of Sinatra songs will now play after losses.
The Yankees got rid of their decades-long rule that required their players to be clean shaven. And one ex-Red Sox player saw it as an opportunity to take a playful shot at his former teammate.
The Yankees amended their facial hair policy after it had been a topic of internal conversation for around 10 years.
