Oscar-winning director Woody Allen has defended his appearance at a Moscow film festival following strong criticism from the Ukrainian government.

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry condemned Woody Allen for speaking virtually at a Russian film festival, calling his participation "a disgrace and an insult" to the victims of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The director defended himself after the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs accused him of helping "whitewash" Russia's crimes.
