In Minnesota, school buses make at least 10,000 school bus trips daily. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, school buses are the safest mode of transportation for children — children are eight times safer riding in a bus to school than taking any other vehicles.

In Minnesota, there are five different types of school buses: Types A, B, C, D and III (Attachment 1). Types A through D are different sizes of “yellow” school buses.

"School bus driver" means - a person with a school bus endorsement on a valid Minnesota driver's license or a person with a valid Minnesota driver's license who drives a vehicle used as a school bus that has a passenger seating capacity of ten or less, including the driver.

No person may pass or attempt to pass a school bus in a motor vehicle on the right-hand, passenger-door side of the bus when the school bus is displaying the prewarning flashing amber signals as required in section 169.443, subdivision 1.

State law categorizes school buses as type A, B, C, or D, and it defines two additional special classifications of vehicles used to transport students: multifunction school activity buses and type III vehicles. Minnesota Statutes 2021, section 169.011, subdivision 71.
