The scalene muscles are three paired muscles that form the lateral compartment of the neck. As you can see in the video, when contracting on both sides, the scalene muscles allow neck flexion. When these muscles contract only on one side, they provide lateral flexion of the neck to the ipsilateral (same) side. Scalene muscle strain can cause neck and shoulder pain 🤕, but relief is just a stretch away 👋. To alleviate this discomfort, try gently tilting your head to the side, bringing your ear towards your shoulder 👂, and tucking your chin towards your chest, stretching the back of your neck 🤯. Rolling your shoulders forward and backward can also help release tension 🌪️. For added relief, apply heat or cold therapy to relax the muscles ❄️, gently massage the affected area to promote blood flow 💆‍♀

Scalene muscles will often get adhered to the nerve roots that branch off the spine and run down the arm.
