Doctor Mary Edwards Walker was born in Oswego New York in 1832 and was determined to pursue a medical career in a time reserved for men. After graduating from Syracuse Medical College in 1855 she volunteered for the Union Army during the Civil War and served near the front lines. Captured by Confederate forces she spent four months as a prisoner and later received the Medal of Honor for her bravery.
